I en tid där bokens död årligen förutspås, tar Sticky Drama utgångspunkt i Octave Uzannes novell ”The End of Books” från 1894 för att producera en ljudbaserad teaterföreställning där den föränderliga bilden av författaren och läsaren undersöks.
I sin novell The End of Books skriver Octave Uzannes (1851–1931) fram en profetia om en utopisk framtid full av ljud där böcker om hundra år är försvunna och ersatta av ljudböcker. Författare exponerar sina verk genom “fonografer” som ropar ut dem på stan och tar patent på sina egna röster istället för på texten själv. Berättarrösten får i denna framtidsutsaga större betydelse än självaste berättelsen. När förlag som Nordstedts köps upp av ljudboksföretag som Storytel är The End of Books inte längre en fiktiv berättelse utan en till stor del införlivad verklighet, med konsekvenser på den lästa textens betydelse och ekonomi.

Men har lyssnandet gett oss större frihet? Har berättarrösten fått mer makt över texten?
I Sticky Dramas The End of Books sätts idén om “bokens död” och ljudbokens utopi på sin spets. För kan ett medium verkligen dö? Och är det verkligen så att vi börjat bry oss mer om hur saker låter än vad som sägs? När allt runt omkring oss verkar ha blivit begåvat med en röst som kan berätta saker för oss – allt från sängar till iPhones – tycks det inte lika självklart att berättarrösten kommer till oss som en befrielse, utan kanske som en fråga om hur länge till vi ska orka lyssna.

The End of Books är det andra samarbetet mellan Sticky Drama och Audiorama. Audiorama initierar och driver projekt med inriktning på samtida ljudkonst, hörspel och elektroakustisk musik. De beställer, producerar och presenterar nya verk av tonsättare, ljudkonstnärer och dramatiker.

Sticky Drama är det långsiktiga konstnärliga samarbetet mellan Agnes Östergren, Olof Runsten, Patsy Lassbo, Ruby Nilsson och Sara Fors. Samarbetet har som mål att dels bedriva konstnärlig utveckling och research tillsammans, simultant med mer eller mindre omfattande konstnärliga produktioner som riktar sig mot publik.

In a time when the book’s death is annually predicted, Sticky Drama takes its starting point in Octave Uzanne’s short story The End of Books from 1894 to produce an audio-based theater performance exploring the changing image of the author and reader.
THE END OF BOOKS is the second collaboration between Sticky Drama and Audiorama.

Uzanne’s short story presents a prophecy of a utopian future full of sounds where books will have disappeared in a hundred years and are replaced by audio books. Writers will expose their works through “phonographs” and patent their own voices instead of the text itself. In this sci-fi story on the future of the book, the narrator’s voice will be given greater power than the story itself. And when publishers such as Nordstedts are acquired by audiobook companies like Storytel, Uzanne’s The End of Books is no longer a fictional story but by and large an incorporated reality, with consequences on the meaning and purpose of writing and reading.

But has listening given us more freedom? Has the narrative voice gained more power over the text? Sticky Drama’s The End of Books puts the idea of “the Book’s death” and the utopia of sound to the test. Because can a medium really die? And is it really the case that we started to care more about how things sound than what is actually being said? When everything around us seems to have been gifted with a voice that can tell us things – everything from beds to iPhones – it doesn’t seem as obvious that storytelling comes to us as a liberation, but perhaps more as a matter of how much longer we will have the strength to carry on listening.
