Nothin'
Teaterverket Västman / Odenplan

“Name’s Annabelle Jackson. Folks been callin’ me trouble since I was knee-high, but truth is, I never was trouble. I was quiet. Too quiet. See, when the world tell you over an’ over you too much, you learn to swallow yourself whole. I learned to bite my tongue so hard I still taste blood.
But lemme tell you somethin’—silence has a price, an’ it aint cheap. Silence’ll kill you slow. It sit on your chest like a stone, make your bones heavy, make your dreams shrivel. I had me dreams once, bigger than this whole damn town. Thought I might be a movie star, thought somebody might love me right. Ain’t nobody ever did.
‘Cept her. My daughter May. She was my light, my only song. And I held her close, tighter than I ever held myself. But even love cain’t save you if you stay quiet too long. That silence… it creep in, it steal everything you got ‘til you wake up one day an’ realize all you got left is guilt and a clock tickin’ down on you.
So now, here I am. At the end.
Mouth dry, heart poundin’, but I’m speakin’ at last.
‘Cause if there’s one thing I know now, it’s this—keepin’ quiet, doin’ nothin’? That’ll cost you everythin’.”
Nothin’ is the story of Annabelle Jackson, a Southern Black woman facing her final hours on death row. What we witness is her recording of her prison interview—seen for the very first time—a testimony that forces us to reckon with the heavy price of what happens when we say nothing, and when we do nothing.
This gripping debut monologue invites the audience to sit in the tension between guilt and innocence, truth and performance, choice and consequence. As the clock ticks toward her execution, we are forced to ask: is her story a warning, a plea, or a reckoning?
