Höstens program på Rönnells inleds med saxofonisten Basel Rajoub och hurdy-gurdy spelaren Mattias Loibner.
Basel Rajoub har gästat Re:Orient tidigare med hans ensemble Soriana. Han är en av vår tids främsta blåsinstrumentalister och kompositörer från Mellanöstern. Hans kompositioner rytmer och melodier från så väl det arv han växte upp med i Aleppo som från jazz.
Matthias Loibner spelar hurdy-gurdy på ett nytt och eget sätt. Han behandlar sitt instrument ömsom ömtåligt ömsom obevekligt och oscillerar mellan nästan glömda och nyfunna ljud - från äldre, nästan bortglömd musik till experimentell, nutida dansmusik.
"Basel skriver om kompositionerna för detta projekt: I am taking a melody inspired by the East, bending its oriental roots and grinding it through a mesh of a hurdy gurdy. It’s a huge challenge – not least because I have no way of knowing where Mattias’s improvisation will take it. Richness of a hurdy gurdy in terms of its sound and diversity of expression is a story in itself – and in the hands of a master like Mattias it becomes unstoppable, inexhaustible.
It’s elusive, this repertoire. It flows from medieval to baroque, then immediately becomes modern, contemporary, even oriental – bringing the old sounds of the Iberian Peninsula with it. This is the challenge: that I do not know what the notes I’ve written will be feel and sound like when the piece is performed. No piece is the same, none can be performed twice in the same manner. Each piece becomes singular. It’s fascinating. And petrifying. "
